What is a Punch List?

by | Apr 26, 2017 | Additions, New Construction, Remodels

It is safe to say that no home reno project comes together exactly how you planned it. So that is why it is so important to have a punch list. What’s a punch list? Well, it is basically your final checklist to ensure everything you wanted was done and done right. Here is what you need to know in order to put your own punch list together.

What Goes On a Punch List?

The first thing you are going to need is the original contract with your contractor. This normally comes into play near the end of the project,  but it is still important to have. As for the rest of the punch list, that really depends on the scope of the project. However, every punch list should include whether a project has been done to your standards, not necessarily the date of completion.

For example, if you are enduring a kitchen reno, it’s not enough to know that the sink has been installed but whether the sink works and has no leaks. The cabinets should open and close properly and be free of scratches. Speaking of scratches, a punch list should also include a list of damages that need to be repaired, missing parts that haven’t be delivered, and work that is not complete.

How To Use

Towards the end of your project, you will do a final review with your contractor, checking all the items on your punch list. If you notice any flaws or last minute details that need fixing, you can point them out. This helps keep track of all the things that have been successfully completed and the things that still need fixing.

Why is This Important

If you have hired McDonough Construction, you can rest assured that you have hired an honest contractor. So we will happily welcome the punch list. However, if you have hired “some guy” your brother knows, a punch list is still important because it can help you both manage expectations and raise the project to a more professional level. A punch list shouldn’t take the place of regular communication between you and your contractor. This is just simply a document that keeps you both organized and accountable.
