December Home Maintenance Checklist

by | Dec 8, 2016 | Additions, New Construction, Remodels

The holidays are quickly approaching and there is no better time to get some things done around the house before Florida turns into an icebox. Plus if you are expecting guests to crowd into your home this holiday season, here are three things you should do before your guests arrive.

Beef Up Insulation

Check the insulation in your home to make sure it has not deteriorated or flattened. This will reduce it’s efficiently and even though Florida does not receive massive snow storms you will definitely feel the difference with better insulation. An easy way to check your insulation is to pop open your attic and see if your insulation is level with the attic floor joists. If your insulation is packed below the joists you are going to need more of it to keep the cold out and the warm in.

Decorations

Decorating for Christmas is seen as a competition in the eyes of some people. This can make for pretty amazing displays that light up the night. However, if you just want to be festive without going overboard you will save money and time by replacing your old, incandescent lights with LEDs. These also stay cooler and decrease the risk of fire and chances of a Christmas Vacation style catastrophe. Another quick way to save time is if you are continuously hanging lights in the same places every year, you might want to consider installing permanent hangers, which will save you time every year thereafter.

Creepy Crawlies

During the winter time, the bitter cold can make your house look more appealing to critters such as squirrels, rats, and raccoons that will crawl through any small opening they can find just to escape the cold. So before you have a full on infestation on your hands, inspect your home’s exterior to make sure vents are covered, holes are patched, and cracks are sealed. You are going to have a hard enough time keeping your cat out of the Christmas tree, image a family of squirrels.
