Building Better Homes: Conscious Construction

by | Nov 7, 2019 | New Construction

It is easier now than ever to “think green”. With all of the ecological advancements, living sustainably has become not only easier, but more affordable as well. The best way to “think green” is to start from the ground up – literally!

As population rates rise, so does the construction industry. A positive and lasting change can be made by implementing these conscious building options.

Ways to build consciously

Building with an eco-friendly approach doesn’t just mean using certain materials and items. There are many tips and techniques that can constitute as taking a conscious approach to construction. These techniques are as follows:

  • Using locally sourced materials to reduce the carbon footprint made from importing and transporting products.
  • Make use of recyclable materials.
  • While building, utilize inventory control to reduce waste of material.
  • Ensure that materials are well protected when not in use to avoid them being damaged and having to be replaced.

It is also important to keep in mind the energy-efficient home design principles that are involved in new construction. These include insulation, air quality, and heating and cooling.

Eco-friendly buildings

Aside from techniques you can take to build consciously, there are several different types of homes that are designed to be sustainable.

  1. Passive Solar

These types of homes are usually double insulated and use the sun to generate heat. This heat is then stored for future use and can even be used to power certain appliances.

  1. Earth Sheltered

These homes are the perfect option for those who live in colder climates. They are dug into the side of a hill, so the earth insulates the walls of the home.

  1. Modular

The way these homes are built is what contributes to their energy-sufficiency. They are built in factories with eco-friendly material, which reduces the noise and material pollution that on-site construction can cause. They are then transported to their permanent residence and assembled on site.

  1. Insulated Concrete Form

The pros to building an ICF home is that they are airtight, energy-efficient, and the construction time is quicker than building a plywood form home. The frame of the home is made from concrete blocks that lock together.

  1. Containers

Essentially, yes, these types of homes are made from shipping containers. Because traditional building materials are excluded from container homes, they are a prime eco-friendly choice. Contractors are able to add insulation and design around the container to make it look more like a home.
